Best Family Vacation Yet! Exploring Hidden Gems:: A Destination Editorial Photographer’s Perspective

As a destination editorial photographer who loves adventure, I often dream and research hidden gems worldwide and write about travel tips to help you on your next epic adventure. This time family vacations have taken center stage. I took my own advice on visual tips to bringing my dream adventures to life and my dream boat took sail with back-to-back family fun!!!

Planning the best family vacation yet? From Europe’s hidden gems in Slovenia and Croatia to Jamaica’s sun-soaked beaches, this guide—crafted by me, Judith Rae, a destination editorial photographer—covers everything you need to know from packing tips to staying healthy while traveling.

My first stop, Europe…

I flew into Zurich and then to Slovenia to avoid the foot traffic in Paris with the 2024 Summer Olympics and met up with my daughter, who is now living her dream of pursuing life abroad.

We met in Slovenia with our Slovene/Egyptian side of the family.

We spent time at Terme Snovik, a beautiful indoor/outdoor cold spring spa, and walked around the city of Ljubljana, enjoying musicians from around the world filling the air with the beautiful rhythms of their souls. Together, we visited the springs at Kamniške Bistrice and had lunch at a local Slovenian Kraljerv hrib restaurant with hammocks around the tables and camping grounds for those interested in a longer stay. Trying local delicacies and enjoying new experiences.

Discovering Slovenia’s Secrets :: Hidden Gems to Explore in Slovenia

Velika Planina:

A beautiful alpine pasture in the Kamnik Alps, where you can explore traditional herdsmen’s huts and enjoy breathtaking mountain views.

Škofja Loka:

A charming medieval town with cobblestone streets and a castle overlooking the town. It’s a perfect spot for a quiet afternoon walk and local pastries.

Predjama Castle:

A dramatic cliffside castle near Postojna, with secret tunnels and a fascinating history.

Gostilna Prod Vrbo is a Favorite Restaurant of ours in Ljublana.

Croatia here we go…

Unveiling Croatia’s Coastal Charm :: Hidden Gems to Explore in Croatia

We then drove to Croatia’s seaside, swam in the Adriatic Sea, laid under the ancient pine and cypress trees, and ate at the seaside restaurant.

Lotosi Beach

Located 3 km from the town center, Lotosi Beach is a gorgeous natural pebble beach nestled in a cove. In the Adriatic sea, with a fun floating water park. Along the beach, you will find The Istrian House restaurant.

We explored the city of Rovinj, a Croatian fishing port on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula. The old town stands on a headland. We walked up the cobbled stone streets admiring the tightly knit houses that lead to the hilltop church of St. Euphemia, where we lit a candle for my Mom and watched the sky light up with a dramatic sunset over the Adriatic Ocean as a young violinist played her tune.

Hidden Gems to Explore in Rovinj:

Golden Cape Forest Park:
A serene escape from the crowds, perfect for a peaceful walk or a quiet swim in the hidden bays.
Rovinj’s Island Archipelago:
Take a boat trip to the small islands just off the coast, where you can find secluded beaches and crystal-clear waters.
Dvigrad:
Explore the ruins of this medieval town hidden in the Istrian countryside, just a short drive from Rovinj.
As we walked, we caught up on life, ate gelato at Gelateria Italiana – Venti 22 – Poreč and enjoyed being in the present with one another. We realized that this time, right here, right now, is like no other. We were happy to be together and enjoy what was.
Spending time in my mother’s home, I could smell her, and my heart searched for her. Snezko, their neighboring cat, came to visit, and birds swooped in to say hello. Driving past tall fields of corn that seemed to fill the sky. Winding roads, I have yet to explore. We visited Mom’s grave in Kamnik, a northern town in Slovenia. The church bell rang on the hour, and ants marched along her grave. Kamnik Alps filled the space between the clouds and the church tower. Thankful for our time together, bringing back memories of Mom to remind me of a life well-lived.

Next Stop, Jamaica…

Packing Tips for a Two-Week Adventure from a Destination Editorial Photographer

Layering Clothes:

I love these packing cubes to keep all my things neatly organized. Europe’s weather can be unpredictable, so pack versatile layers. A light jacket (I always like to have a jacket for the plane ride), comfortable walking shoes, and a mix of casual and dressy outfits.

Adapters and Chargers:

Ensure you have the correct adapters for European outlets and a portable charger for your devices, especially when traveling between countries.

Health Essentials:

As a destination editorial photographer who travels often, keeping my gut healthy on the go is important to my overall well being, probiotics that don’t need refrigeration, along with charcoal capsules for any digestive discomfort have proven to be super helpful. Staying hydrated is crucial, so I often drink as much water as I can and do my best to eat an apple each day and fresh greens too. When I know I’m going somewhere that won’t have access to freshly made green juice or I need a boost, I like to take these superfood tablets.
Arriving back in the States just in time to pack for our next adventure to Jamaica. Alex and I flew into Montego Bay, where we met our Jamaican family to drive to Negril and enjoy time on the beach. Where the island breeze is filled with the sweet scent of perfectly ripened pinapple and salt water. Horses trott by and baby starfish lined the ocean floor.
We took a catamaran to Rick’s Café and jumped off different levels of cliffs. I felt the fear of jumping off the cliff at Rick’s Café, so I took some steps back, tried the smallest jump, climbed up the steps, and took the leap off the next highest cliff. Despite the fear, I did it anyway! We swam in a nearby cave with bioluminescent water. Alex found a beautiful coral reef reminiscent of a mini underwater castle, and on the way back, dolphins led the way!!!

Unforgettable Moments in Jamaica :: Hidden Gems to Explore in Jamaica:

Half Moon Beach:

A secluded beach with a private island, perfect for a quiet day away from the crowds.

Blue Hole Mineral Spring:

A hidden gem where you can dive into a natural mineral spring, said to have therapeutic properties.

The Great Morass:

Explore this extensive wetland area on a guided tour, where you can spot native wildlife and learn about the local ecosystem.

YS Falls:

A lesser-known waterfall located in St. Elizabeth Parish, surrounded by lush gardens and natural pools, perfect for a day trip.

Push Cart:

A lively restaurant in Negril that serves up traditional Jamaican dishes with a twist. It’s located within the Rockhouse Hotel and offers stunning views of the sunset.

Scotchies:

A local favorite for authentic Jamaican jerk chicken and pork, located in Montego Bay. The smoky flavors and casual atmosphere make it a must-visit.

KFC MoBay:

Yes, you read that right—KFC in Montego Bay is famous for its unique Jamaican twist on the classic fried chicken, making it a surprising yet popular spot for locals and visitors alike.

Staying Healthy While Traveling :: Health Notes for Jamaica:

Sun Protection:

The Jamaican sun can be intense, so I made sure to pack high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and lightweight, breathable clothing to stay cool and protected.

Hydration:

Staying hydrated is essential, especially with the heat. I always had a bottle of water and drank a lot of coconut water too!

Local Remedies:

I found a natural insect repellent and I hear that a dab of coconut oil can help soothe any bites or sunburns.
What fun to play with family and enjoy magical moments of ease together. Next came wakeboarding. With the help of my brother-in-law, husband and father-in-law, I was able to get up on my first try. I took a nose dive and then got up again and rode for a bit. Next came doubles with Alex, and experiencing this ride together felt so loving and romantic, playing with each other in the Carribean Sea. Falling in love with one another day after day.
Dinner at Miss Lily’s, sharing a local specilty called festival and traditional Jamaican cuisine, dancing under the stars on the beach. Sitting across from one another, enjoying the light from within that dances in our eyes, thankful for our time together.

Packing Tips for a Jamaican Adventure from a Destination Editorial Photographer:

Light, Breathable Fabrics:

I knew we would spend a lot of time on boats and in the ocean so I brought along this mini splash proof pouch to keep my accessories safe. Jamaica’s tropical climate calls for light, breathable clothing. I packed plenty of swimsuits, cover-ups, and sundresses.

Snorkeling Gear:

Bringing your own snorkeling gear can enhance the experience, as you’ll always be ready for an underwater adventure.

Natural First Aid Kit:

Always smart to pack a small kit with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and aloe vera gel for any minor injuries or sunburns. The aloe plant is easy to find in Jamaica as it grows abundantly however the link I added to aloe gel is a next best thing.
