I combine my love of fine art with my eye for storytelling to capture the beauty and wonder of your experience so that you can enjoy and share your soulful story for generations to come.

hi, i'm Judith Rae

Pushing Boundaries: Embracing Confidence

We share a unique connection to the ocean. When my husband and I decided to paddle out after a hurricane, aiming for a specific spot in the water. I was looking for the small waves—what my husband affectionately calls “baby waves.” But as I paddled further, every bit of anxiety and fear surged through me. My shoulders ached, and the urge to turn back to shore grew with each stroke. But I kept going.

“Embracing fear is not only about accepting uncertainty; it’s about trusting ourselves to handle whatever comes our way.” Meera Lee Patel

It wasn’t just about catching a wave; it was about confronting my fears. Fear of what might be in the water, of the challenges ahead, and of the unknown. Paddling past the discomfort, I reached the spot where the water was breaking and caught my wave!

As Meera Lee Patel writes in My Friend Fear, “Fear is a compass pointing you to the areas where you need to grow.” Embracing this idea, I realized that venturing into the unknown waters guided me toward personal growth.

The triumph of overcoming these fears was exhilarating, a testament to our strength. Surfing, like life, is more effortful than it seems. It’s about pushing beyond your limits, embracing discomfort, and finding freedom. This resilience is a metaphor for approaching life, work, creativity, and even travel experiences. It’s a reminder that we all have the strength to conquer our fears and achieve our goals.

My dear friend Randy‘s story mirrored this. At 54, he ran his first Ironman triathlon, running through knee-high water in the dark with the temperature dropping and a storm brewing in the distance. Enduring 16 hours of relentless swimming, biking, and running. The mental fortitude it took to continue despite exhaustion, pain, and doubt speaks to the resilience we all have within us. This reliance is seen especially when we push past our perceived limitations. Randy’s story reminds me that we are capable of much more than we realize.

Women Riding Life’s Waves. Pushing Boundaries: Embracing Confidence

In From Fear to Freedom: Women Riding Life’s Waves,’ I share the inspiring journeys of women who are living proof of resilience. They paddle out into uncertainty, confront fear head-on, and find strength with each wave they conquer. This journey isn’t only about catching waves; it’s about building confidence, overcoming fear, and finding freedom. Their stories resonate with everyone facing challenges.

“Courage is not the absence of fear, but the decision that something else is more important.” Meera Lee Patel

Whether it’s Randy completing his Ironman or the women in my docuseries confronting the ocean’s vastness, courage is about prioritizing growth over comfort. Pushing past boundaries and embracing confidence.

What waves are you riding today? Whether you’re paddling out for the first time, running your own race, or facing insurmountable challenges, it’s not just about reaching the finish line. It’s about the courage to keep going, the strength to push through fear, and the triumph you feel when you catch your wave. Life, like surfing, is about finding beauty in the process. It’s about finding the courage to face your fears and the strength to push past them. On the other side is a sense of accomplishment and growth.

Let’s inspire each other to ride the waves of life with courage, strength, and confidence.

The Power of Reinvention: Inspired by individuals who push past their boundaries and reinvent themselves.

Frida Kahlo, for example, turned her pain into power. Despite her physical limitations due to a life-altering accident, she painted some of the most emotionally raw and transformative works of art. Showing us that resilience isn’t just about survival—it’s about thriving against the odds. Her story speaks to the power of embracing discomfort, finding beauty in pain, and ultimately, creating something lasting and meaningful.

Similarly, Beyoncé continues to redefine what it means to be a modern icon. From breaking barriers in the music industry to advocating for inclusivity and female empowerment, she has built an empire rooted in artistry, activism, and resilience. Her journey reminds us that success often requires pushing past personal and societal limitations and having unwavering confidence in your vision.

Lady Gaga has never shied away from confronting challenges head-on, whether it’s through her bold and avant-garde performances or her advocacy for mental health. Her reinvention as a pop star and an acclaimed actress in A Star is Born demonstrates the courage it takes to transform oneself across different industries. For those of us in creative fields, Gaga’s story is a testament to pushing boundaries, embracing change, and using every experience to fuel growth.

When we look at Taylor Swift, we see an artist who has consistently reinvented herself while remaining true to her core values. From her transition from country to pop to using her platform to challenge the status quo in the music industry, Swift has shown that evolution is a natural part of success. Her journey reminds us that flexibility and innovation are vital to staying relevant in business, just like in art.

Venus and Serena Williams have redefined what it means to be champions on and off the court. From their groundbreaking achievements in tennis to their advocacy for equality, they continually push past societal and personal limits to lead with strength and determination. Their influence stretches beyond the world of sports, showing that resilience, hard work, and focus can lead to lasting impact across industries. Their perseverance serves as a reminder that excellence requires pushing beyond obstacles and constantly raising the bar.

Simone Biles shook the world when she courageously decided to step back during the Tokyo Olympics, prioritizing her mental health over the pressure to perform. This act of self-awareness and bravery redefined what strength looks like. Her story teaches us that true success comes from knowing when to rest, refocus, and come back even stronger.

“The strongest people are not those who show strength in front of us but those who win battles we know nothing about.” Meera Lee Patel

Joanna Gaines has been an inspiring example, embracing her creative vision and pushing boundaries in her career. As co-founder of Magnolia, Magnolia Network, author, design expert and a television personality, she has transformed homes and built an empire. The Magnolia Empire is based on authenticity, family values, and a strong work ethic. Her journey from small-town Texas to becoming a household name in design shows how embracing your passion and staying true to your roots can lead to incredible success. Joanna reminds us that confidence comes from trusting your instincts and believing in the beauty of your vision.

Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina Supreme Court Justice. Her journey from the Bronx to the highest court in America is a story of pushing past barriers, embracing her heritage, and leading with determination. Her resilience speaks directly to those striving for success in spaces that weren’t necessarily built for them.

“If you don’t have a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.” – Shirley Chisholm.

MacKenzie Scott has redefined philanthropy with her swift and impactful donations to various causes. Her approach emphasizes the importance of decisive action and challenges us to use our resources to make meaningful change.

Carolina Maria de Jesus, a Brazilian writer and one of the most significant literary voices of the 20th century, embodies the essence of overcoming adversity. Born in extreme poverty, she lived in a São Paulo favela as a single mother raising three children. With just two years of formal education, she chronicled her daily life. Her diary, published as “Child of the Dark,” unveiled the harsh realities of poverty in Brazil. Her courage to document her experiences challenged societal norms. Giving a voice to the voiceless, showing that our stories can inspire change, no matter our circumstances.

We can also look to Isabel Allende, a Chilean writer whose novels weave magical realism with political and social commentary. Facing exile and personal tragedy, she used her experiences to fuel her storytelling, becoming one of the most influential Latina authors. Her ability to transform personal pain into powerful narratives teaches us about the healing power of creativity and the importance of giving voice to our stories.

“Once we accept our limits, we go beyond them.” Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein, one of the most brilliant minds in history. Renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to science, particularly his theory of relativity. What stands out about Einstein isn’t just his genius, but his courage to challenge conventional thinking. As a Jewish man in a tumultuous time, he faced political and societal challenges and redefined what was possible in physics. His confidence in exploring the unknown reminds us that no matter our background, pushing boundaries and trusting in our ideas can lead to world-changing innovation.

Greatness comes from continually pushing past what we believe is possible.

Jordan Peele has redefined the horror genre by infusing it with profound social commentary. Starting his career in comedy with the sketch show Key & Peele, he transitioned to become an acclaimed director and screenwriter with films like Get Out and UsI am not a horror fan, but my favorite piece that he has created so far (also my latest obsession) Wendell & Wild, which he co-wrote and co-produced with Henry Selick. His work challenges traditional narratives and pushes audiences to confront uncomfortable truths, exemplifying how stepping out of one’s comfort zone can lead to groundbreaking art.

Henry Selick, known for his mastery of stop-motion animation, has created visually stunning and emotionally rich films such as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline. His dedication to a meticulous and often underappreciated art form demonstrates the power of perseverance and innovation. Selick’s ability to bring fantastical worlds to life inspires us to pursue our creative visions, no matter how challenging the medium.

Evan Funke is a celebrated chef who has revitalized traditional Italian pasta-making techniques through his Los Angeles restaurants. After facing professional setbacks, Funke immersed himself in the craft, traveling to Italy to learn from pasta masters. His commitment to authenticity and craftsmanship showcases how pursuing and refining one’s passion can lead to renewed creativity and success. Reminding us that sometimes pushing forward means looking back to where it all began. I truly enjoyed watching him share his story on Chef’s Table, Noodles.

These stories inspire us to lead with resilience, creativity, and strength. We’re all capable of riding our wave of success, no matter the challenges that arise.

Embracing fear as a catalyst for personal growth, creativity, and self-discovery.

My Friend Fear: Finding Magic in the Unknown is a book by Meera Lee Patel that delves into embracing fear as a catalyst for personal growth, creativity, and self-discovery. Patel invites readers to reconsider their relationship with fear. Instead of viewing fear as an opposing force to avoid, she suggests embracing it to guide us toward personal growth and fulfillment. Through a blend of personal anecdotes, reflective prompts, and her watercolor illustrations, Patel explores how fear often signals areas where we have the most potential to grow.

Patel’s message is that by befriending fear, we can unlock creativity, discover our true desires, and live more authentically.
